If you would like to adopt a Schnauzer from the AZ Schnauzer Rescue, you will first need to complete the adoption profile below.Once completed, you can request to be added to the waiting list, or specifically request information about a schnauzer listed on our database by filling out the Adoption Request Form.We use a contract that has two provisions that we care the most about: (1) The dog must be kept as a mostly indoor dog. We do not adopt out to people who leave the dog in the backyard. Mini Schnauzers want to be with people and we consider it cruel to lock the dog outside all day. (2) You have to agree that if for any reason you cannot keep the dog in the future, it has to come back to us. We put a lot of work into these dogs and we do not want any of my dogs going to the pound or down the street to the neighbors. We hope that people realize we do not mean we want that dog back when the dog is 19 years old and in failing health. This provision is for when something happens in your life that you simply cannot keep the dog. Every dog is adopted on a contingency basis. No adoption is final until 2 weeks after you have taken the dog into your home. We prefer that you give us a check, and we can hold that check until we have talked and you tell us that you are happy and the dog is happy. We believe that there is the right dog for every home and the right home for every dog. If, for any reason at all, the placement is not working out during that 2 week period, just bring the dog back and we will give you your check back -- and we will not take you off the "waiting list". That is how we do the rescue.
1. What is your gender preference? All our dogs are neutered or spayed. Male Female 2. Do you have a fenced yard and a doggy door? (Neither of these is required for adoption.)
3. Do you have small children, other pets, cats, etc.? Please be specific.
4. If you have a dog now, what is the breed, sex and is that dog neutered?
5. How active is your life style? Do you want a dog to go jogging with you? Camping? Walking? Or sit at your feet or in your lap?
6. Do you care about color? Mini's come in Salt & Pepper, and Black; Vary rarely do we get a Black and Silver; We have had almost 20 white mini's in rescue.
7. Do you care about ear shape? We get both cropped ears and natural ears. We have no control over the way the ears come and only young puppies can have ears surgically cropped.
8. Do you care about size? Sometimes we get a minis that are on the small size and sometimes we get ones that are taller, and long legged.
9. Some folks prefer a miniature schnauzer that had more attitude, a little feisty; others prefer a sweet natured, easy going dog. Do you have a preference?
10. Have you had a mini schnauzer before? Mini schnauzers, for health reasons, must be groomed. (Hair must be kept plucked out of the ears to avoid infection & even deafness.) If Yes, please share some details about your previous schnauzer.
11. What age would you consider? We generally rescue adult dogs, not puppies. A mini has an average life span of 15 years and 19-year-old schnauzers are not uncommon. A 10 year old mini is not an old dog. The average age of our rescue dogs is 4-6 years. We get some wonderful older dogs also. A mini under age 2 can be a handful, very energetic, requiring patience, and lots of time and training. The best rescue dog is about 6 years old, mature, yet playful with years of love to give.
12. Where do your live? Would it be hard or easy to come to Chandler, AZ to see a dog? We will not ship a rescued Shnauzer.
13. Would you consider a "special needs" dog? An older or one that had a medical problem that we have taken care of, but may need special food, care, and/or medicine? Please indicate why or why not.
14. Occasionally, we get in a schnauzer mixed with other breeds. Would you consider a mixed breed schnauzer? Why or why not?
15. Is someone home during the day? If not, where will the dog be kept when you are away? Please be specific. (i.e. gated indoor area, shaded mild outdoor area, kennel or crate, with owner, etc.)
